KITCHEN LIGHTING TIPS...

Kitchens, is our centre of family activity, win hands-down, as the modern home’s busiest room.
Choosing the right lighting is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to transform this domain into a comfortable, usable living space.

A properly lit kitchen helps make food preparation easier, while creating an enjoyable atmosphere for work, dining or family fun.

PUAN ANITA APARTMENT

The Right Recipe for Kitchen Lighting
Lighting requirements depend on the size and complexity of the kitchen space. Small kitchens may require only a central ceiling fixture and task lighting tucked under a cabinet.

Lighting in the Center of the Ceiling
A large, surface fluorescent provides the most light for the least cost. This type of fixture will supply plenty of well-diffused general lighting perfect for moving about the room safely, peering inside drawers and cabinets, and performing chores.

Under Cabinet Lighting
Available in slim, energy-efficient fluorescents, miniature track lights or low-voltage linear systems, under cabinet lighting quickly and easily lights up counter tops.

Lighting Over the Kitchen Table
The kitchen table is multipurpose - used for dining, homework, hobbies or family business. A decorative pendant, operating with a dimmer control, will provide sufficient task lighting. Use the dimmer to lower the light for dining or entertaining.

Lighting the Sink or Range
Recessed down lights assure even illumination. Install them over the sink and range areas to create adequate task lighting for cooking, baking and scouring pots and pans

Some helpful kitchen lighting tips:

1. Kitchen lighting isn't just for flourescents anymore. There's a wide array of options, from xenon to puck to halogen lighting.

2. Dim and dimmer! They're not all created equal. Make sure you select a dimmer with the correct wattage for your lighting needs.

3. Task lighting doesn't have to be ugly. Sconces are one option that will help you get the job done, and they're easy on the eyes.

4. And it may sound corny, but safety first. Don't take shortcuts such as bypassing a remodeling box when wiring. And always turn off the power at the source.

ISLAND DESIGN

More than ever kitchen islands become popular. Whenever the size permits it, islands are the perfect way of combining usability with design aspects . Whether you put it along a single row kitchen cabinets lineup or together with a L-shape kitchen, the island will be like the heart of the entire room. Therefore you should consider some basic design ideas.
At the beginning of any kitchen making, let's have a closer look of what could go into it. The following list just wants to give you a slight idea and suggestions for your own needs.
What to put into the kitchen island

Oven - Obviously the main component of any kitchen island is an oven. Whether it is a gas or electrical one is up to you, but it will determine a possible cut out into the island counter.

Kitchen exhaust hood - in the middle of the room
Think about whether you want a stand-alone hood or nicely covered perhaps with a kitchen cupboard. You should also think about a electric connection for it.
Space - A minimum space between the kitchen islands and the kitchen cabinets should be given. Here at least 45 inches (110 cm) works best. Consider the kitchen draws and door open when you analyze the pathway you have.
Lights - Very important for any island is good lightning. You really want the island being illuminated well. So foresee any lamps and spots in the ceiling and around the kitchen exhaust hood.

Electric - Along with your kitchen island goes the perfect place for additional sockets to plug in any kitchen appliance. You should foresee some of the, place underneath the islands counter. Also think about having the switches for any lightning around here. Could be an excellent place to switch on the lights.

Storage and Shelves - It always looks nice to have cookbooks and perhaps a television placed on the top of a kitchen at the cupboard. But keep in mind the steam and grease around the oven which is not very easy to clean. Even the best kitchen exhaust hood will not take away all the dirt. As a rule of thumb - on the oven-side closed cupboards on the counter side open cupboards.

Material for the island counter - The first and most obvious decision will be to use the same material for the counter of the island as used for the kitchen counter. However you could certainly think about different materials, just to give it a more interesting look. Especially marble and DuPont® corian kitchen tops work very well with all sorts of kitchen islands.

Finally, before deciding on any kind of kitchen make sure you are certain about the shape. Apart of the traditional rectangle and square once, the rounded or even oval island can bring new life to your entire room. So think about a symmetrical or asymmetrical shape and have your kitchen designer made drawings of various options. All in all if you plan it well you might certainly agree that kitchen islands can become the center of every kitchen.

DESIGN TIPS ( PART 2 )

Before getting in touch with any cabinet maker or kitchen remodeling specialist, make sure you get some basic points clear:
Material used. What kind of material do you want your kitchen do be? Massif wood or just veneer covered doors and drawer tops. Wooden kitchen cabinets will give a warm and friendly kitchen atmosphere but might be more difficult to clean.
Framed or panel kitchen doors and drawer fronts are also an important decision. Nicely framed mortise and tenon doors will give the furniture a more traditional look than plain panel fronts.
Material for the Worktop. This is a very important point for your decision. The material used for the worktop can make the difference if you later on like the kitchen or not. You can choose from a variety of different materials like marble, granite or other stones, to laminated plywood,
metal and massif wood e.g. ashwood.
Hinges, knobs and drawer slides should be of excellent quality. Especially these types of kitchen hardware is really what you want to be as durable as possible. So look for high quality fittings at all your cabinets.
Also think about
sinks and faucet you might need. Make sure the design fits well into the overall room.
If you think about these areas during your decision making process you should find the right cabinets for your home. Ask your
kitchen designer or specialist also for a reference list of some former customers so you can get in touch and check out durability and usability of the kitchen cabinets.

DESIGN TIPS ( PART 1 )

Looking at your kitchen cabinets and you might find it is time to change the place a little bit. Just bought a new home and looking for ideas on kitchen furniture and what to look for. Let’s have a closer look on cabinets and what to look for when deciding on your next kitchen.

Considering a new kitchen, first decide on general distribution of the kitchen cabinets according to the space available. With different types of kitchens, single-row, L- or corner-shape and U-shape with or without kitchen islands, where to put what, depends on your room size.

The classical way to distribute the basic kitchen appliances around cabinets is: refrigerator, space, oven, space, kitchen sink with dishwasher. Obviously not considering any additional space for a possible washing machine. This traditional way of lineup keeps the heat of the oven away from the fridge and still allows room to have the close enough. Obviously it is up to you and the space you have at your home to find the best distribution. You can just draw a simple floor plan of your kitchen and cut out of paper board some pieces equivalent to each of your appliances. This will give you a rough idea of what could go where. Later on when you have a more concrete feeling of where each cabinet will go to you can talk to your cabinet maker to get a detailed drawing of your ideas, before getting on with it
